In order for collaborative learning to work it starts with the questions we pose to them. This article shows 3 ways to ask questions that engage the whole class in collaborative learning.
Questioning Stems
Having question stems posted in your room or on a cheat sheet helps you quickly pose the right question at the right level of rigor. See the DOK 3 Link on your lesson plan. It has a ton of question stems for you.
Multiple Choice Collaboration
Give students a multiple choice question in groups of 4, and make them number off A, B, C, D. Ask each student to prove WHY their answer choice is right or wrong. That will take your collaboration to the next level.
Deadlines Matter
Set a timer for how long collaboration can take. Three to five minutes is a good rule of thumb, and remind students when they have 1 minute left. This creates more engagement, more commitment, and a sense of urgency to get the right work done.
This week, I hope you will take time to thank people that don't teach kids. They do something powerful however. They lay a strong foundation for teachers to teach kids. They are our secretaries, paraprofessionals, maintenance staff, custodians, technology staff, transportation staff, nurse, food service staff, librarians, and counselors. We salute you!
